The solid is an efflorescent (loses water readily) crystalline substance that dissolves well in water. It is also called sodium hyposulfite or "hypo". It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines,

the most important medications needed in a basic health system.

Properties：monoclinic crystal, relative density: 1.729(17℃). easy to be soluble in water. It is stable in neutral and alkaline solution. It has strong reductive ability. Aqueous solution is alkalescent.
